Haosheng Zhang began his study of Chinese medicine at the young age of 15. In 1979 he entered Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine where he spent 5 years studying both Chinese medicine and western medicine. In 1980 he became an apprentice to Deng Zhongjia邓中甲, one of China’s primary experts in the fields of herbal formula studies and classical foundations of Chinese medicine.

From 1984 to 1987, Haosheng Zhang worked as a physician (internist) at a busy hospital in China which included a rotations in the emergency room. During this time he gained invaluable experience dealing with a wide variety of clinical conditions. After 3 years of clinical practice, working with patients with difficult or critical conditions such as cancer and neurological disorders, Haosheng Zhang found that he was not satisfied with his knowledge of Chinese medicine. He felt his understanding was insufficient to help his patients and that he needed to dig deeper into the classics of Chinese medicine to find answers. He then committed himself to further study focusing on the classical texts of Chinese medicine.

In September 1987, he went back to Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine to study under Zheng Xiaochang 郑孝昌, one of the most eminent experts in the field of Chinese medical classics. Haosheng Zhang’s studies in this area included; Huangdi Neijing, Nanjing, Shennong Bencao Jing, Shanghan Lun, Jingui Yaolue, Zhubing Yuanhou Lun and the Zhenjiu Jiayi Jing, etc. From these three years of intensive classical scholarship, Haosheng Zhang gained a deeper understanding of the clinical application of classical Chinese medical knowledge.

In 1990 Haosheng Zhang began to serve on the medical staff at Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine as a teacher, researcher and clinical practitioner. In 1996 he was elected as the deputy director of the department of Fever School Studies. The following year he was chosen as the official successor to this academic lineage (China’s most distinguished Fever School expert, Prof. Zhang Zhiwen 张之文 of Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine.) by the government of People’s Republic of China. For his considerable achievements, he was also honored with the “Best Teacher” award from Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 1993.

From 1997 – 2012, Haosheng Zhang was a memeber of the academic and clinical faculty at Classical Chinese medicine department at the National College of Natural Medicine in Portland, Oregon.
